Survey Crew Chief 1 & 2

This position works under the direction of a Project Manager, Professional Land Surveyor, Survey Coordinator, or the Division Manager. The Crew Chief supervises and assists the field crew in carrying out a variety of Land Survey tasks including establishing horizontal/vertical control, topographic surveying, property boundary surveys and construction staking. Typical advancement is based on the quality performance of essential duties and responsibilities. Discretionary advancement is based on employee’s actions and accomplishments. This position may provide training and supervision for Survey Field Technicians.

Essential Duties:

• Supervise field crew to ensure safety and efficiency of work completed
• Understands scope of survey work and executes field procedures to complete field tasks
• Efficiently operates survey instruments, including electronic total station, digital level, GPS equipment, robotics, 3D laser scanner, and data collectors
• Reads and interprets deeds, plats, plans and specifications
• Operates and maintains a variety of survey equipment in safe and efficient manner
• Sets priorities and meets deadlines of each project and/or job
• Identifies and implements effective courses of action to complete work assignments in a safe manner
• Maintains files of maps, documents and other records as needed
• Takes descriptive and legible survey notes and drawings
• Communicates field conditions to office personnel
• Keeps mileage records
• Supports and performs topographic, construction, boundary, and control surveys
• Creates and files job hazard analysis forms
• May provide support and guidance during new hire and ongoing training within Division
• Follow and abide by the DMA employee and safety manuals
• Completes required initial and ongoing training as requested by DMA
• Wears DMA branded Safety-Shirts and appropriate PPE when working on-site in the field
• Completes other duties as assigned

• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables based on client preferences and in areas where documentation may be lacking, or limited standardization exists
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
• Possess great organizational and time management skills
• Familiar in Microsoft Office Tools (Teams, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and Document Control Management Software
• Capable of being assigned and managing multiple projects with a range of complexities

Required Skills:

• Knowledge of surveying principles and practices and engineering design and construction practices.
• Experience with large project surveys for highway projects, infrastructure projects, airport projects and transmission line projects
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• The employee is regularly required to use a calculator, electronic data collector, and 2-way radio.
• Ability to work outside in a variety of conditions and terrain.
• Ability to solve problems and perform surveying calculations.

Education & Experience:

• Highschool Diploma or general education degree (GED) required
• 3+ years’ experience in similar roles is required

• Highschool Diploma or general education degree (GED) required
• Associate degree or above in Land Surveying, or a related field of study is preferred
• 5+ years’ experience in similar roles is required

Certification & Licenses

• Valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle is required
• Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) preferred, but not required

Employment

• This is a regular, Full-Time position; individuals in this position will work 4-10-hour days, typically Monday – Thursday
• This is an hourly, non-exempt position; the pay rate for this role ranges from $23.00 – $33.00 per hour.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or listen.
• The employee frequently is required to use arms (hands & fingers) to handle or feel and reach.
• The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl when collecting data in the field.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
• The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; slippery wet paved embankments; potholes, usually hidden by underbrush; railroad tracks with loose rock ballast slopes; vertical walls such as storm channels; large sewer tunnels with uneven or curved slippery floors; or gravel/loose stone creek bottoms.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate except when working near highways or airports, which can expose the employee to a high noise level requiring hearing protection.
